AI Front Desk Helper vs Bland AI
Bland AI comes up whenever someone searches for AI phone agents, and its per-minute price looks tiny next to a monthly plan. Here's what Bland actually is, what you'd be building, and when it's the smarter buy.
What Bland AI is
Bland AI is infrastructure for AI phone calls. You build the agent: in its visual Pathways editor you lay out the conversation as a map of connected steps, each with a prompt or a fixed line, and conditions that decide where the call goes next. Special steps call outside systems through webhooks, look things up in a knowledge base, transfer the call or end it. Booking into a calendar isn't a built-in step: you connect it yourself, with a webhook to your calendar or your own back end. Developers can do all of this through the REST API instead.
Pricing is per minute of talk time. The Start plan has no platform fee: $0.14 a minute, $0.05 a minute while a call is being transferred, one inbound number included, and caps of 100 calls a day and 10 at once. Build is $299 a month plus $0.12 a minute ($0.04 during transfers), with up to 2,000 calls a day, 50 at once, five voices, and features like warm transfers and guardrails. Enterprise is a custom contract sized to your volume, with options such as on-premises or private-cloud hosting, custom voices, a BAA for healthcare data, single sign-on, data residency and an engineer assigned to your account.
Where Bland AI is the better pick
- You have a developer, or you are one. Bland gives you full control of every step of the conversation and every system it talks to. If you want to design the call yourself, that's the point of the product.
- You want the lowest cost per minute. On the Start plan a contractor taking 60 to 100 calls a month at three to five minutes each would pay roughly $25 to $70 in talk time. No monthly plan beats that, if your time building it is free.
- You run high-volume outbound calling. Build allows 50 calls at once and 2,000 a day, and Enterprise is sized to your volume. That's call-center scale.
- You need enterprise compliance or hosting. A BAA, single sign-on, data residency and private hosting are Enterprise options. AIFDH doesn't offer them.
- You're building a product of your own. If AI calling is a feature inside your software, Bland is a building block. AIFDH is a finished product.
Where it runs out for a contractor
The per-minute price is for the phone conversation, not for a front desk. Everything a contractor needs around the call is yours to build and keep running: the conversation map, the connection to your Google Calendar so it can't double-book you, the text that goes out when a call is missed, the reminder the day before an estimate, the follow-up on estimates that go quiet, and somewhere to see which calls turned into jobs. Each of those is a webhook, a script or another service, and each one breaks on its own schedule.
So the real comparison is $25 to $70 a month in minutes plus a developer's time, against $297 to $497 a month for a system that's already built for the trades. For an owner who's on a roof all day, the developer's time is the expensive part.

How AI Front Desk Helper is different
AI Front Desk Helper is the finished front desk, not the parts. It was built inside a painting company by an owner who was losing jobs to voicemail on the job site, then losing more when nobody followed up on estimates. So the pieces a contractor needs come already connected: booking that checks your Google Calendar first, a text-back when a call is missed, reminders before estimates, follow-up texts on every open quote, and a dashboard that shows which calls became jobs. You don't design the conversation. You tell us about your business, the AI learns it, and you adjust it in plain English. There's no platform to learn and nothing to maintain.
What AI Front Desk Helper does besides answer the phone
Answering the phone is the entry point, not the product. Here is the rest of what runs once a contractor is on AI Front Desk Helper:
- Booking that respects your calendar. Estimates land on your own Google Calendar after a free/busy check, so the AI never offers a slot you're already on a job for. Reschedules and cancellations move or remove the event.
- Estimate follow-up that doesn't quit. Text sequences at 24 hours, 3, 5 and 10 days on every quote that hasn't closed, written like a contractor, stopping the moment the customer replies.
- Objection detection. "Too expensive" or "need to think about it" triggers a recovery script instead of a polite goodbye.
- Instant online quotes. For painting, roofing, siding, fencing, gutters, junk removal, window cleaning and pressure washing: a branded quote-and-book page for your business (yours looks like quote.yourcompany.com) where customers get a ballpark price and pick a time, day or night.
- Outbound campaigns. AI calls and texts to your past-customer list for seasonal reactivation, win-backs and referral asks. You set the campaign; it dials.
- Google Business Profile, handled. Every new review gets an owner reply drafted for you; profile posts can be drafted, approved and scheduled weeks ahead; a profile health audit shows how you stack up against nearby competitors.
- Revenue coaching by lead source. Every phone number is tied to where it came from (Angi, LSA, Facebook, referral, yard sign), so the dashboard shows which marketing produces booked revenue and which to cut.
- Customer DISC profiles. Every caller and texter gets a buying-style read (D, I, S or C) from what they actually said, with a confidence flag, so you walk into the estimate knowing how to sell to them.
- Franchise HQ. One rollup across every location for multi-unit operators.
- Reseller program. Agencies and consultants can offer the whole system under their own brand.
- Optional add-on: AI Rep Coach. Records in-home estimates and coaches the people who sell, with manager review and team analytics. Sold separately, per seat.
Who should pick which
Pick Bland AI if you or someone on your team writes code, you want to design every step of the call yourself, you run calls at call-center volume, or you need enterprise hosting and compliance. It's a strong platform for teams that build.
Pick AI Front Desk Helper if you're a home-service contractor who wants the phone answered, estimates booked and quotes followed up this week, without hiring a developer or learning a platform.
If you're a marketing agency deciding whether to build an AI receptionist for your contractor clients on Bland, weigh that against reselling one that's already built. Our reseller program lets agencies offer AI Front Desk Helper under their own brand, with their own logo and colors. Ask us about it.
Questions people ask
Is Bland AI cheaper than AI Front Desk Helper?
Per minute, yes. On Bland's Start plan, 60 to 100 contractor calls a month would cost roughly $25 to $70 in talk time. That buys the phone conversation only; calendar booking, missed-call texts, reminders and follow-up are yours to build. AIFDH is $297 to $997 a month with 500 to 3,000 minutes included and those pieces already built: missed-call texts on every plan, calendar booking and reminders from Pro ($497).
Do I need a developer to use Bland AI?
To get a working front desk, in practice yes. Bland's Pathways editor is visual, but connecting a calendar, texting and a CRM means setting up webhooks or using the API. AIFDH needs no code.
Can Bland AI book appointments?
It can, once you connect it to a calendar yourself through a webhook or your own back end. AIFDH Pro and Elite book straight into your Google Calendar after checking free/busy.
Which one is better for outbound calling?
For very high volume, Bland: its Build plan allows 50 calls at once and 2,000 a day. AI Front Desk Helper Elite runs outbound campaigns to your own past customers, such as win-backs, seasonal reminders and referral asks.
