Thumbtack leads: an AI front desk that texts every one back in seconds
You pay for a Thumbtack lead the moment it lands, and so do the other pros it went to. Here's how to answer every one while you're on a job, and the limits you should know before you switch it on.
Why speed decides Thumbtack jobs
Thumbtack is built for comparison shopping. Its own pro page says it plainly: customers get quotes from up to 5 pros. The homeowner fills out one request, and several companies start competing for it at the same time. A Thumbtack moderator put the reason to hurry just as plainly: customers are significantly more likely to hire a pro when they hear back within that first hour.
The problem isn't that you don't know this. It's that the lead lands while you're on a ladder, in a crawl space or driving, and by the time you look at your phone, two other pros have already asked the customer about their project.
What happens when a Thumbtack lead comes in
Thumbtack sends the new lead to your AI Front Desk Helper account the moment it arrives. Thumbtack leads carry the customer's name and phone number (Thumbtack's lead documentation lists the phone as included when the customer provided one). Within seconds, Alex texts them from your business number:
What happens after the first text
When the customer replies, Alex, the AI receptionist, carries the conversation from your business number. It answers from what you've set up: your services, your service area, your hours. With the estimator turned on, for junk removal, window cleaning, pressure washing, house cleaning, pest control, garage doors, pool service, flooring, concrete, window installation, stump grinding and lawn care, it gives a ballpark from your own price sheet and says the crew confirms the price on site. For every other trade it books the estimate instead of quoting a job price.
On Pro and above, Alex offers real open times from your Google Calendar and books the estimate right in the text thread. If the customer calls your number instead, Alex answers the call. You get a notification for every new Thumbtack lead, and new leads are saved with Thumbtack as their source, so you can see which platform turns into booked work.
Two things it deliberately doesn't do. It doesn't call the lead: the homeowner asked by message, not for a phone call, so Alex texts first. And it never drops a lead. If a lead arrives without a usable phone number, or the text can't be sent, the lead is emailed to you and shows up in your dashboard so a person can take it from there.
Setting it up
- In your AI Front Desk Helper dashboard, open Settings and find the Thumbtack tile. Copy your personal connection address.
- In your Thumbtack pro account, open Integrations and add a webhook for new leads, pasting your address. If your account doesn't show that option, Thumbtack's partner team can add it for you.
- If Thumbtack already sends your leads to another CRM, check with Thumbtack whether you can run two. Some accounts can only send leads to one place.
- Send a test lead if Thumbtack offers it. Alex texts the test number, and you'll see the lead in your dashboard.
What it can't do
- It doesn't reply inside Thumbtack. The connection is one-way: Thumbtack sends the lead to us, and Alex answers by text message. Thumbtack measures how fast you respond inside its own inbox, so a text from Alex doesn't count there. Keep replying in Thumbtack as well, even if it's just "Sent you a text!"
- No email address. Thumbtack leads come with a name and phone, not an email, so everything runs by text.
- It doesn't lower your lead cost. You still pay Thumbtack for each lead. What changes is how many of them you actually get to talk to.
A straight answer about where this stands: the connection is built and we tested it ourselves on September 30, 2026, sending a test lead to my own company's account and getting the text within seconds. No customer has connected a live account yet, so we have no results to publish, and we won't make them up.
Questions contractors ask
Does Alex reply inside the Thumbtack app?
No. Thumbtack sends the lead to us one way, and Alex replies by text message to the phone number on the lead. Keep replying in Thumbtack too, because Thumbtack measures your response time in its own inbox.
How fast does the first text go out?
Within seconds of Thumbtack sending the lead. In our own test on September 30, 2026, the text arrived a few seconds after the lead was sent.
Will Alex call the Thumbtack lead?
No. The customer asked by message, so Alex texts first. If they call your number, Alex answers.
What if a lead comes in without a phone number?
It's emailed to you and shows up in your dashboard, so you can answer it in Thumbtack yourself. Nothing is dropped.
Can Alex book the estimate from a Thumbtack lead?
Yes, on Pro and above. Alex offers real open times from your Google Calendar in the text thread and books the one the customer picks.
Fifteen minutes. We call your business number, run a real call, and show you what happens after it. You decide.
